What you’ll love about this recipe

  • The fresh flavors! Pre-packaged/prepared guacamole is so very unappealing in my opinion. Guac prepared with fresh ingredients just prior to serving is quite the opposite. The bright, fresh flavor of the lime juice, onion, cilantro, and garlic is what it’s all about. So do yourself a favor and skip the store-bought stuff!!
  • The simplicity! Another reason to make guacamole from scratch is because it’s so simple. Seriously anyone could make it successfully. It requires only seven ingredients and about five minutes of your time. And you do need any special tools!
  • The numerous uses! There are soooooo many ways to use guacamole. You can serve it with chips for dipping, top off your favorite Mexican dish with it, or shovel it in with a spoon as is (I never do that 😉).

Ingredients (+ notes & substitutions)

Ingredients for easy homemade guacamole (see recipe card).
  • Avocados: You’ll need three medium-sized avocados or four smaller ones. In my experience/opinion, the success of guacamole is all about choosing the right avocados. When picking the avocados opt for those that are darker in color and firm with a little bit of squish. Avoid mushy overripe avocados.
  • Lime juice: Freshly squeezed is best but bottled is perfectly acceptable. If going fresh, one lime will be sufficient.
  • Coarse salt
  • Jalapeno: One small jalapeno will do. I typically remove the seeds but the choice is yours as far as leaving the membranes intact goes. Leaving them be will add a little more heat.
  • Cilantro
  • Onion: I prefer red onion but white works just as well.
  • Garlic: One medium clove is perfect for my taste, however, feel free to adjust to your liking.

How to make easy homemade guacamole (+ tips)

1. The first step is to remove the avocado flesh from the peels. My favorite way to do this is to slice the avocado within the peel both horizontally and vertically (see photo below for reference) and then squeeze it out directly into a bowl.

Sliced avocado half in peel.

2. Next, you will need to mash the avocado. To do this, you may use a fork or if you have one a manual food chopper. Mash to desired consistency.

3. Stir in the lime juice and salt then the jalapeno, cilantro, onion, and garlic.

4. Add salt and lime juice to taste and serve.
